Research themes

Within the team, I am responsible for developing the theme “Photonics Instrumentation for Health”. The objective of this theme is to develop new applications based on photonics methods to solve longstanding problems related to health.


Main research projects

In this project, we are interested in developing novel imaging methods based on the fundamental principles of optics with the objective of providing objective metrics to healthcare professionals during surgical procedures. In particular, we are actively working on quantitative diffuse optical imaging methods, with two main axes of development: fluorescence imaging and endogenous optical properties imaging. We previously developed these methods at a fundamental level and translated them during animal and first-in-human studies. We particularly focus on the robust extraction of optical parameters from scattering media (e.g. fluorescence, optical properties, oxygen saturation) from real-time images and the conditions necessary for their utilization during surgical procedures.

Our current research activities focus on the quantitative measurement of fluorescence and optical properties, over a large field-of-view (> 100 cm²) and in real-time. We develop acquisition and processing methods, as well as design and fabricate new imaging systems compatible with future clinical use. We are interested in several instrument types, from large open surgery systems to flexible endoscopy. Moreover, we investigate the relationship between optical parameters (e.g. fluorescence, optical properties, oxygen saturation) and biological / physiological parameters linked to the development of conditions based on animal models. Finally, we perform the translation of the most promising technologies towards first-in-human trials.
